otheros > 10GB

From what I've read, it looks like you are only able to allocate 10GB to otheros from within the PS3. Is it possible to re-partition the drive manually to allow more space for linux? Has anyone successfully done this, or is an external drive the only option? 10GB is really not enough for a reasonable linux install with any local media storage.
