erm..never used linux before and have no idea what it can actually do...besides having YDL on a ps3 im just curious to what can i do if i put ydl on my ps3..ive done some googling and seen emulators around but never came across any that said they worked
can anyone tell me what ydl can actually do? what emulators currently work
i know steam (some may know what steam is) runs on linux..and can be used to make a dedicated server ...does this work with YDL on ps3? also steam working on linux doesnt just support dedicated servers you can run games too? therefore meaning maybe the ps3 can play some steam games?
im just really confused as to what linux can do really...i know steam can run ..no idea if it would work with YDL on ps3..even if it did are games possible? what emulators work ect...
thanks in advance ![]()
did do googling but...barly got any answerers and tbh i really dont know what i should be googling to find my anwers...decided id come to a place where i know people know the answers ![]()

u might possible be able to use run a steam server but the PS3's Hypervision blocks out RSX(ps3 gpu) access in linux so u wont be playing to many steam games if any at all

HYPERVISOR
You have to be specific, because then he'll ask what Hypervision is, and then you would give the definitaion for the hypervisor, when Hypervision is a few things:
A web design company, Videos, and a Samsung Television....

steam cannot run on linux, without a windows emulation. and Dedicated server can run on linux but not on a ppc linux. If wine does somehow come out with wineppc, then you'd be able to run steam, starcraft, and whatever tickles your fancy.

also can you get decent Game boy and game boy advance emulators on it? And ontop of that can you play pokemon yellow?
I am deadly serious. This is the deciding factor if i get Linux or not...

Over all, 90% of the programs that you would want to run on Linux is blocked by the PS3
This means that the otheros is just a waste of HDD space and you are better off using a pc

Offline
you could try it and if you dont like it just re-format your hdd so linux goes off the HDD and doesnt take up space anymore.

oh and you can stream anything so you could play your pokemon yellow to

Linux In My Opinin Is Crap Emulation Is Possible But You Would Only Be Able To Play Some Of The Old Mario On A Snes Emulator, there Have Also Been A Windows Emulation Through You Cant Play Any Games On It So It Is Basically A Waste Of Time.....through You Can Get Snes Emualtor And Maybe Gb Emulation As Well But At This Moment Untill Sony Gives Us A Minium Of 50% Graphic Power We Can Not Play Games With 3d Its Just Not Possible Till Sony Or Us Works Out A Way To Bypass The Graphics Security So At This Point Stick With Ya Pc:)

WHAT THE frak IS WITH THE CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's not really graphics security. There is a hypervisor (check wikipedia) in place here that keeps us from accessing the graphics "card" for more than display output. It also prevents CPU power utilization. I think we're limited to just the PowerPC CPU, not the whole cell. Basically, we're running Linux on a single core PC with on-board graphics processing. In easy words, an extremely budget PC, like a netbook.

i saw it here so i deleted my thread in the help section.
ok, I got my parents ps3.
She really wants to watch videos from this website.
Here's a link
http://dabdate.com/player.php?lang=0&am … 0&pr=3
PS's web browser wouldn't open it. (unsupported file)
Any way to play it on ps3 browser?
If not,
I'm looking at yellow dog linux 6.1.
If I were to install this would I be able to:
1.) Watch blu-rays at full 1080p (my parents tv is 1080p and i remember earlier versions of linux couldn't get access to the graphics card)
2.) Watch that video link that I provided without installing anything else?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Siptang

Linux on a PS3 is Linux on a 64bit PC with no flash(outside an extremely incompatible and buggy 3rd party package,) or 3D acceleration. It also has just 512MB of RAM, and the speed of the RAM doesn't compensate for lack of capacity in any way.
At the end of the day there are 3 things worth doing to it:
1. Try to break it's security
2. Write stuff in assembler and make a small and efficient boot loader for it. Either do push buffer demos, proper emulators, or explore the instruction set and interfaces.
3. Use it to crack crypto, or run math and thread intensive algorithms.
It's a 'shotty' desktop outside that, and programming over the Linux kernel is boring with no GPU.

That file Is WMV. Get the codec and use a media player in Linux. BlueRay sounds cool, but looks exaggerated. I bought BladeRunner and watched it on the PS3. They added cheesy particle effects in some places..

any suggestions on which one that i should use?

MPlayer should work without having to install anything else. Also, I think that video is dead, I can't get it to play under any platform, and I have codecs for everything. I get server errors under winamp and wmp 11.

Loads of emulators work with YDL.
Google YDL emulators. Neo geo, snes etc...
Make sure you get the latest version of YDL 6.2 it uses the vram as temp memory
